Sketching Faith: Matthew 8:26

Matthew 8:26 (NIV) says:

“He replied, ‘You of little faith, why are you so afraid?’ Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm.”

In this verse, Jesus is speaking to His disciples, who are afraid during a storm while they are on a boat. After questioning their faith, Jesus demonstrates His authority over nature by calming the storm, showing both His power and the importance of trusting in Him, even in times of fear.

The Sketch: So, I decided to try something new—a retro cartooning style sketch. Picture this: Jesus separating the storm from the sky from the boat. I thought, why not do a “sketch painting”—or is it “paint sketching”?—basically just throwing color onto a sketch quickly, without worrying about perfecting the lines or details. No final, polished drawing—just movement and mood.

Then, the devotional I was reading shifted to the story of a man possessed by many demons who called themselves Legion. After Jesus cast the demons into a herd of pigs, which then ran off a cliff to their deaths, the townspeople asked Jesus to leave. Despite witnessing a miracle, fear took over.

Fear—it’s something we all face at one point or another. Some people are ruled by it, others harness it. But when your faith feels shaky, the hardest thing can be trusting God in the midst of it all. It’s a daily challenge, something we have to keep working on.

How do you deal with fear? Do you turn to God first, or like most of us, do you try to conquer it on your own? Run away? Let me know in the comments!
